Friend of the Ocean
In 1960, Dr. Shaklee introduced Basic-H®, one of the first biodegradable and non-toxic cleaners on the market. Shaklee has supported research on environmental contamination in oceans through long-term associations with the Wild Dolphin Project and Ocean Research Alliance.
Cousteau Society:
The company supplied the Cousteau Society with environmentally friendly cleaning and other products used on board Calypso and Alcyone research vessels, as well as in the Cousteau Society's offices.
Habitat Restoration
Shaklee helped build schools, health clinics, and planted more than one million trees in Asia through a partnership with American Himalayan Foundation, an organization chaired by Sir Edmund Hillary.
Sustainable Business Practices
The Pleasanton, CA headquarters has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects as a centerpiece of sustainable development for its energy-efficient design and responsible resource materials.
Global Climate Change
Shaklee sponsored three expeditions to the North Pole by renowned explorer Will Steger to measure the impact of global warming.
In 2001, Shaklee became the first Climate Neutral™ certified company in the U.S., meaning that Shaklee was certified by a third-party organization to have zero net impact on global warming from its operations. The company's entire greenhouse gas emissions were audited from raw materials to production, shipment, and business operations.
Shaklee invested in fossil fuel emissions reduction programs, including building windmills and solar panels to offset total CO2 emissions.
In 2002, Shaklee was awarded the Climate Protection Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the Environmental Stewardship Award from Social Accountability International.
Humanitarian Aid
Annual giving efforts increased 2000 percent from 2004 to 2005, nearing $3 million in 2005. Much aid went to natural disaster relief:
Donations of nearly $500,000 went to U.S. hurricane relief. Working with nonprofit
Shaklee Cares*, Shaklee also matched the first $100,000 of additional cash and grants donated through the company, underwriting all administrative costs and services to ensure 100 percent donated funds were directly applied.
Shaklee and Shaklee Cares worked through an in-country partner, Feed the Children, to provide more than $500,000, including 90,000 pounds of product, for South East Asian Tsunami Relief, including environmentally safe Basic-H® Concentrated Organic Cleaner for clean up. Pakistan earthquake relief efforts included the shipment of nearly 200,000 nutritional products.
* Shaklee Cares is a publicly supported, nonprofit organization, founded in 1992 in the wake of Hurricane Andrew, and is committed to helping people directly affected by natural disasters and emergencies.
Natural Products
Shaklee has invested $250 million in research and development and clinical studies. Shaklee products are never tested on animals.
Earth Day
In 2006, Shaklee unveiled "A Million Trees. A Million Dreams.™" to raise awareness of global warming and initiate tree planting efforts. Inspired by 2004 Nobel Peace laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai and her Green Belt Movement, Shaklee will plant one million trees to offset a significant portion of the carbon dioxide the company produces. The company also donated $100,000 to the Green Belt Movement to support tree planting in Kenya, Dr. Maathai's home.
To mark Earth Day 2005, $105,000 in proceeds from the sale of Basic-H® Concentrated Organic Cleaner went to the Green Belt Movement. Shaklee was one of seven official sponsors of the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day, and Bas® was one of the official products in 1990.
Environmental Education
Shaklee has been a community education partner, providing free science lesson plans for schools, home school parents, and scouting organizations. More than 8,000 lesson plans were distributed in 2004.
The Shaklee brand is synonymous with high quality and efficacy, representing one of the most respected names in both the health and wellness and the direct selling industries. Its robust product portfolio includes 49 patents and patents-pending worldwide. Shaklee currently operates in Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and the United States, with plans to expand its markets and its message to 50 countries in the next decade.
