and Announces Global Environmental Campaign, A Million Trees.
A Million Dreams™.
Inspired by the visionary work of Dr. Wangari Maathai and The Green Belt Movement, Barnett announced that in honor of the company's 50th Anniversary, Shaklee will implement a tree-planting campaign to celebrate Earth Day 2006 across the United States and Canada. Shaklee Corporation's more than 750,000 distributors will organize tree-planting events in their respective communities. The company's goal is to plant more than one million trees throughout North America, helping offset a significant portion of the CO2 the company produces while raising awareness of global warming.
"This year is particularly important for Shaklee because we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary, and in honor of our anniversary, we are inaugurating our biggest global environmental campaign on Earth Day - A Million Trees. A Million Dreams™", said Barnett. "The Green Belt Movement shares Shaklee's model for promoting environmental sustainability. We would like to duplicate efforts of The Green Belt Movement in the United States and Canada. I thank Dr. Wangari Maathai for being such an inspiration to the people of Kenya and to people around the world and for setting an example for social responsibility and environmental activism." "It is very important for us to appreciate the resources we get from nature - to receive with gratitude and not to waste, to use them responsibly and accountably," said Dr. Wangari Maathai. "With all the health products that Shaklee is involved in, they all come from the earth. Because they come to replenish our bodies to give us better health, it is very important to understand the earth must be healthy herself in order to give us products that can promote our health. Trees clean the earth. They clean the air. I am really happy that Shaklee is involved in this fantastic tree planting campaign. We will join them. We will be together." Shaklee will also donate $100,000 to Dr. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement so that she can plant another one million trees in Kenya. Established by Dr. Wangari Maathai thirty years ago, The Green Belt Movement is a grassroots organization that concentrates on planting trees with groups of women, helping to conserve the environment and improve the quality of their lives. Dr. Wangari Maathai was awarded The 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her significant work with the environment. Shaklee Corporation is the number one natural nutrition company in the United States and has an impressive 50-year history as a pioneer in healthy living and a leader in health and environmental issues. Continuing its strong commitment to global warming, in1989 Shaklee helped Sir Edmund Hillary's American Himalayan Foundation plant some one million trees in Nepal. In 2000 Shaklee decided to take steps to offset its CO2 emissions, with the objective of having a net zero impact on global warming. As a result Shaklee became the first company in the United States to be certified Climate Neutral™ by investing in fossil fuel reduction projects to directly offset the amount of CO2 the company created. In 2002 Shaklee received the U.S. EPA's International Climate Protection Award as well as the Environmental Stewardship International Award from Social Accountability International for leadership on global warming.
